We "Build a Better Midland" by
promoting volunteerism through community partnerships and projects. In addition
to promoting volunteerism, we develop the potential of women and work together
to improve our community. From our original start with projects like story
telling at the library and assisting the Children's Theatre, our program has
grown and involves current projects like Face the Race and Scholarship
Clearinghouse. We join together with community partners and initiate change,
growth, and improvement in our community.
For example, consider our Suits With Skills
project. We partner with Safe Place of the Permian Basin and Buckner Children
and Family Services to provide a 12-week session program. During this program,
women who are survivors of domestic abuse, learn how to effectively obtain a
job. Specifically, each woman learns how to build a résumé, learn interview
skills, exhibit a professional appearance and communicate effectively in the
workplace. Upon completion, these women are well-equipped to obtain a job. This
job gives a woman an opportunity to give her family a life that may not have
been available otherwise. But to most of these women, a job means more than
being able to provide financially. It gives them a sense of confidence,
determination, purpose and motivation. Suits With Skills is all about educating
and empowering women in a way they may have never before experienced. At The Junior
League of Midland, Inc., we are passionate about helping these women break free
from repression to lead self-sufficient and healthy lives.
Of
course, Suits With Skills is just one of the many projects we are involved with
to Build a Better Midland; but it is a prime example of
the educational and charitable purpose of The Junior League of Midland, Inc. We
strive to improve our community through the effective action and leadership of
trained volunteers. We encourage and appreciate your support as "Hand in
Hand, We Build A Better Midland."
